Dispatches from the Co-Prosperity Sphere

We are not defined by the products we buy, the cars we drive, the books we read or the movies we watch. We are more than consumers. We are producers, and we believe that every new skill we acquire makes our lives and our world a little bit better.

Dibble dopp dopp dopp!

It's raining! Hooray! The weather service says it's supposed to keep on raining until Monday. All together now, "We can sure use the water." Very good.

This morning we intended to get up, feed and let out the animals, and then crawl back into bed. We'd work from home and just stay nice and dry indoors. Well, the first part of that worked out okay. We got up and took care of the animals. I even got the nuu-nuu to run, figuring that if we were going to be in bed it was a perfect opportunity to let the maid vacuum. I put in earplugs and went back to sleep. When we woke up again, Aoibheall asked, "Is the generator running? I hear some kind of humming noise."

"That's just the creek," I said. The creek has risen and is carrying dirt, trees, and cattle down to Monterey Bay. It's loud. But no, I was mistaken.

The power was out and our generator had kicked in. We were responsible homeowners and got the generator serviced over a month ago. My bruises from struggling to get the battery replaced are almost healed. We bought our firewood back in the summer. We are so ready for the winter power outages.

Except that now we have cable internet. When we had DSL, it was so slow as to be unusable for VPN work. When we had high speed wireless it was great...when it worked, which was unpredictable. Now we have cable and it's really, really fast...except for when a tree takes out the cable. Then it's dead. There's just no winning, is there?

We figured we'd head over to a cybercafe and work from there. No dice, the road was closed even before we got to highway 9. We decided to turn around and, if we had to go all the way to the top of the mountain to get to the back road, we might as well just keep on going in to my office. That worked out fine. I set Aoibheall up in a conference room and we both got work done.

So anyhow, it's raining, we're okay, the chickens and the dogs and the cats are all complaining that it's wet outside but everyone is well-situated with warmth and shelter so it's all fine. We watch the trees come down the creek and we watch them keep going. Winter has finally come to Boulder Creek.
